Esthetician & Skin Care Products > What is a fair pay for a new esthetician?

I recently just left a job as the only esthetician in a salon, they were paying me 50% of my services and 20% on product sales. I felt this was fair. Once I got in there and started to work they told me they were NOT going to market the room or me at ALL. WHAT? This was there business! He wanted me to work as if it was my business and when I did he would say I was acting like I was a partner in there business! (frustrating) He wanted me there @ NO pay to build the clientele. I felt they were taking advantage of me @ NO hourly pay. If I were renting the space I can see, to be there and build. So I'm wondering what a fair pay rate is starting out and what should be exspected of me, when it is someone elses business? Should'nt there be some kind of hourly rate to have you there when there are no clients as for walk-ins ect..

I pay my aestheticians 2 ways, one is a flat 30% for procedures and the other is $14/hr + 15% commission. Both receive 10% for products. You are getting paid at really no profit to your employer. I have a medical spa and must pay overhead for that room, all supplies, training classes, marketing, and of course liability. Since you are getting paid more than average, it may be worthwhile for you to have the freedom of marketing yourself. If you take a pay cut and they market, you will be stuck with how they market which may not be best for you. Also, give a complementary treatment to the employees as this will be your best marketing!

Hi Cheryl - I hope my information here helps you as I was raised with Salons and have owned four (4) Day Spa locations. The other posting is correct; 50% is high considering they are supplying everything for you. Normally in a Salon they want to rent the room for in todays market Business Owners want to see the incentives of having you on board. I personally avoid Rental for Renters tend to be isolated, they do want to market themselves at times, but they do not understand that Rental means self sufficient. I personally pay Commission for my staff has no desire to self promote. When they complain about being slow I kindly suggest they get out there and market themselves for everything: sheets, products, laundry facility, etc is provided for them and they are at will Contractors. I pay 40% on all the Services as well as 15% on retail, which is 5% above industry standards. I hope this helps, for it is really up to you to decide if you want to build a personal Skin Care practice or be an employee. Best of luck to you!
