Physician Clinical Exchange > Hyperhidrosis

Patient came in with chief complaint of hyperhidrosis. He is begging to make it go away as his social life is disrupted. Holds up arms to show me a shirt drenching in sweat like there's a faucet in there. i am planning to prescribe Propantheline oral but I heard it has a lot of side effects. He probably isn't ready for Botox yet as he is still young, barely in his 20's. I recently read a study in Denmark using Propantheline in a lotion. Has anyone tried this treatment yet? Is this readily available?

Vivian,

Why is he too young for Botox for hyperhidrosis?

Lornell E. Hansen II, M.D.

I would think anyone else would treat him, don´t understand why you say he is too young?

LH and RN overseas, he's only 16 years old. How young is too young anyway?

Botox has not been studied under age 18 but they use very large quantities of Botox for cerebral palsey patients so I would not worry about it in this case. I assume he is otherwise healthy and of average size for his age? It really comes down to the fact that it is bothering him and it is disrupting his life. Another option at least in the US is Drysol (aluminum chloride).

A colleague of mine have treated as young as 14 years old, with great results. Not only helping the client physical but also mentally. As long as the clients understand and the parents are involved its worth it.

Try DrySol. Tried it and works excellent.

Vivian, why don't you try DrySol first? Then consider Botox if Plan A doesn't work?

If all else fails, consider sympathectomy.

I do Botox for axillary hyperhidrosis. Works well for my patients.
