Medical Spa Business Forum > IMD "Horror" laser clinic in Toronto should be closed down.

I know various people who have been burned by the poorly trained laser tech working here. How do places like this stay in business?

08.30 | Unregistered CommenterMiffed

Miffed,

If you feel this clinic is a danger to patients, you should report them to the medical board. They will investigage and take action if warrented. Remember that the best laser providers occasionally produce complications. There is a narrow therapeutic index and sometimes people are tan and don't tell the provider.

Miffed, I went to IMD and Isabelle did Laser Genesis this summer for me. She was very safe. What laser procedure did you go for? Did she burn you or was it Rose the other laser tech?

There are no tech's that have great training in laser, as the laser companies do not offer anymore than 3 hours if u r lucky. All I do know is do not go to the clinic in Woodbridge at Pine Valley and Hwy 7. The lady is a sheer con artist and she learned by using people as guinnie pigs!!! She marked up my face and the sad thing is that they self tittle themselves as Medical Technicians. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? If you have never been to any type of Medical training then please do not self tittle yourself. The Bimbo that owns this clinic has robbed people blind. Hopefully Karma visits her very soon!!!! It is inside of the McDonald's Plaza PLEASE PLEASE BEWARE!!!

I have been a Esthetician for over 14 years now. I take great pride in my Spa and the service myself and my staff give to clients.
I spent the better part of 1 year looking at Laser manufacturers and also spending time twice a year that the Esthetic trade show. It took me this long to find a company that was willing to stand behind the product they sell.

My first question to the sales rep would be "how long is the training for your machine" About 85% of the men and women I did ask this question. They responded by asking me how long I have been doing esthetics. You won't have any problem picking this up. We could do a training session for a couple of hours and you are ready to go.
As my jaw drops, I thank them for their time and keep walking. This happened over and over.
I keep looking and talking and finally found a laser dental/medical company that was able to tell me straight up. My training with this company would be 3-4 days followed up by a sales rep from this company who will go to my Spa and spend 1-2 days in MY ENVIRONMENT.

We were off to a great start. On top of that training I was told I could come back at any time for additional training if I felt I needed more practical.

The problem is lack of training and chop shops willing to anything for a dollar.

I am also in business to make money, but I am also here to help my client. I didn't spend all these years building up my repuation to have it torn down by not finding great education to compliment my IPL.

I went to IMD Laser Clinic 2 years ago for laser hair removal and scar reduction. I was very amaized by the director Isabelle's experience and knowledge. All the staffs were so highly educated, experience and safe. The way she supervises her laser technicians even though there are highly professional is amazing. I had great result on both services such as Laser Hair Removal & scar reduction. I have black skin that is the most difficult skin. The standard of this clinic is very highly standard and safe.
The safety I notices is # 1. Since there is no government standard for laser in Ontario IMD Laser Clinic standard is the highest. I recommended IMD Clinic to every one. $ of my freinds they went there too and finished with excellent result.

Are you serious? I had laser hair removal on my bikini area at the IMD clinic, and I was extremely pleased with the experience. I had 8 laser treatments in total, to achieve the results I needed.

The technician was extremely safe, and throughout the procedure she continually asked to make sure I was comfortable. The day after every procedure, the staff called me to follow up to make sure that there were no problems(which there never were). I always felt very comfortable with communicating to the staff, and I knew that if there had been a complication, my technician would have known what to do.

I have recommended IMD Laser Clinic to my friends, several of whom went on to book treatments there. They were happy with their results too, so I find it very hard to believe that the person who started this topic was ever really a client at IMD.

I know several people who have been to IMD Laser Clinic, including myself. I had treatments done on my neck/beard line. The technicians were always asking how I was feeling and if the treatment being performed was in any way uncomfortable. I received follow-up calls after all five of my treatments to ensure I had no reactions to any procedures.

This "Miffed" clown has no idea what he/she/it is talking about. I doubt that "various people" got burned there as a result of treatments. And if there was a "burn" to speak of, did these people do anything that they should not have done, suich as go out into direct, prolonged sunlight after treatment? The fact of the matter is that the statement "Miffed" had made lacks detail, dtaes, or any other information that could possibly make it credible. This is obviously a competitor attempting to shame a highly reputable business.

If this "Miffed" has any details to share, such as names, dtaes, etc., then by all means, present your case, and perhaps someone may believe what is clearly an ugly lie.

I had hair and pigmented scars as the result of ingrown hair on my face and neck for years. Midsummer 2008 in toronto i started my treatments with IMD Laser Clinic. Isabelle and her laser specialists were very honest, professional, detailed on my skin with lots of care on dark skin.

I finished my series of treatments ass recommended with great results and you see my skin now it is like it was 10 years ago, clean, smooth and no more bumps or pigmentation.

For me IMD Laser Clinic treatments were very professional, safe with excellent result. I know how hard it is to work with my skin but yet i recieve my money's worth.

I recommend IMD Laser Clinic, Isabelle and all her staff to any friend and family for any services they offer. With respect to safety, care and result. I would rate IMD Laser Clinic at the top.

Sincerely
R B

If your buying a laser and have never had one before, no matter what the manufacturer offers on site, you should always look into more laser training either in house by them, or another school. Many who buy cosmetic lasers already have experience with this type of equipment and only need a few hours, or half a day training, and then have a means of support via the phone if needed.

Susan is right that the manufacturers don't train their technicians well at all. They count on the fact that the technician can wing it till they get more familiar, which there is a learning curve even for the best technicians. You still have to be a good technician who actually cares and wants to learn and do the best job possible, which unfortunately when you work for the manufacturer, most just punch a clock and put in their time and run from job to job just fixing the minimum to get them out the door and on the plane.

Thank You

The authenticity of many of the posts on this thread are questionable to say the least. Which are coming from 'competitors', which are coming from IMD's own IP address?? I don't know... either way, what i can say is that I AM a current patient at IMD Yonge/Eglinton clinic ... so far, my experience has also been slightly 'questionable'. The initial consultation was more of a Sales pitch than an exam. Also, they began my laser hair removal treatments WITHOUT doing an initial patch test on the areas being treated (something I now know was incorrect). After the first treatment on my legs and bikini, i did see some result - hair did fall out after 2-3 weeks. However, what puzzled me is why they insisted that I make my 2nd and 3rd treatment after just 4 weeks. The hair is clinically known to re-enter anagen phase after 6-8 weeks on lower body. Any other clinic you go to will tell you that treatments (on legs especially) must be done every 8 weeks, not 4. After raising the issue with Isabelle and Alan, I was met with strong resistance and much rebuttal. This has caused me to lose some trust in their knowledge, and also intentions. I have insisted that my subsequent treatments be 6-8 weeks apart. They told me that if this was the case, they would no longer be responsible for the outcome and results of my treatments there. I did purchase a treatment package initially (due to the Sales pitch) so i have to continue going until my package is done. I am hoping that the rest of my experience at IMD proves me wrong.....

I agree with the above post by Patiently Waiting regarding IMD being highly questionable. The posts from other people are highly questionable to me as well and I doubt they're authentic. I went to IMD laser in 2008 and it was nothing short of a disaster. I'm a veteran of laser hair removal and I also felt pressure in buying their package and fell for their sales pitch. As I'm very familiar with laser hair removal, it never made sense to me why they insisted on me going after every 4 weeks when I didn't have any hair growth. All other laser hair clinics recommend 6-8 weeks and when the hair starts to grow in. My hair didn't even come close to growing in at the 4 week mark and trust me I know my stuff. Rose did my treatments and I honestly don't think she knew what she was doing. I had fine dark hair, and as I went to IMD so frequently, I found that my fine dark hair became DARKER and THICKER. I was so upset and spoke to Isabelle about what happened and she was very apologetic and she could see for HERSELF that my hair had in fact been stimulated by the laser treatment and made WORSE and NOT better. To make the long story short they tried the ELOS treatment on me twice instead of the Lightsheer (which I thoroughly hate). I purchased two packages from them in total and when I finished with them, I hit the ground running and went back to my other clinic that was more expensive-but at least I had a history of getting results with them. Here I am a few years later and it's still a struggle to get those fine hairs back with laser. I continue to go to the clinic I'm comfortable with and I have seen results, but I honestly rue the day I ever stepped into IMD laser. My friends who went to IMD stopped going because the same thing happened to them too....the hairs got darker!!!

The laser that was used on me by IMD to stimulate all the hair growth was the Yag laser and not Lightsheer. I just wanted to make a note and correct the above. Either way they tried to fix the problem with 2 ELOS treatments and then I left them. If you do research you'll find that there is a general consensus of medical professionals that find the ndYag laser to be ineffective for long term hair removal. The longer wavelength makes it safer for darker skin types, but proves ineffective for long term hair reduction.

LP Yag can achieve long term hair reduction in darker skin type (IV and above). It is always a challenge to treat very fine facial hiar especilally in Type V. LP Yag is less effecive in the lighter skin type on finer hair. Alex and diode are much better. Some people like IPL's and they are ok too.

Clinics like this give the industry a bad name. tHe happy customers posting on this website were asked by the owners of IMD to post comments. I know this because i was also pressured by them to post/refer AND they asked me to draw up a letter of satisfaction and sign it on my third treatment (when i asked for a discount after discovering i was paying more per treatment than what was advertised on their website). This is the way business is done at IMD.Unfortunately, their level of knowledge and actual patient success with laser hair removal is not as robust as their marketing and promotional skills. Stay awayr
