The Disappearing Botox Reps.

The worst thing your medical spa can do is to overpromise and underdeliver.

Six months ago I had a visit from a Botox rep that described his position as a new "practice building rep". He handed out a few rhinestone studded 'Botox' t-shirts and promised to help build our Botox revenue. (We had showed up on some Allergan screen for increasing Botox revenue 400% in a year.) I was told that Allergan had empowered these new reps to do whatever they needed to do to help clinics with increasing sells.

So what happened.

Nada. Zippo. Zilch...

I have a better one. I have been in business in Southern California for almost 4 years. I have called my rep on many occasions to come visit me and I have NEVER had a visit from my rep. I only talk to my rep when I call him and he acts like I am bothering him.

Make sure you get the Allergan hologram on it. My Botox rep bought a local med spa and is now competes for my botox biz (no longer works for Allergan). All those Botox samples (I should have got--when using Botox "off-label yrs ago)-I'm sure she's using for her start-up :) Soon Botox will have some competition....I can't wait!

Is anyone else tired of the annual increase in cost and shipping? Even though most of us have not increased our prices due to competition. I also can't wait for them to have a little competition.

Isn't it the first quarter in 2009 that Botox has it's first competitor?

You really dont have to look to far back in history to see that Reloxin will have no effect on pricing for us. Look what Allergan did with Juvederm when they brought it to market. Identical price points as Restylane. Having said that, at least my Restylane rep. makes an effort to show interest in my practice. Every Botox rep. was worthless.

The only time I have seen my Botox Rep was when he wanted me to sign up for some 3 month credit. Do they get a bonus for that? I guess since I don't need 3 months to pay off my Botox/Juvederm Order, I'm not wanted. I will NEVER contact him. I order only from the company in hopes that he doesn't earn a dollar from my account.

We've had several Botox reps and they've all been great. Our most recent rep just did an "employee appreciation night" where all of my employees (14) could get free Botox. She has sponsored events for us and done other things to help promote our practice. In return, if she needs an end of month sale to meet her goals, we buy some Juvederm from her. We also have an excellent Radiesse rep. As a "non-core" practice we were never given a local Restylane rep so when Juvederm came out we dropped Restylane (no complaints from patients so far).

Our first Thermage rep is great. Our current rep is awful! If he were our first contact with Thermage, we would have never purchased the system. Since Thermage relies on "tip" sales for a good part of their profit, we hoped they would be more interested in helping us be successful with their product. This current guy couldn't care less about us or our practice. My only hope is that he will move on to something else like all the other reps and we'll get someone good.

(Interestingly, our current Radiesse rep used to be a Thermage rep (not ours). Our first Skin Medica rep became our Botox rep then left. Our first Thermage rep became our Botox rep but then her territory split and we got someone else. I think we are on our 4th Botox rep, 4th Skin Medica rep, 2nd Thermage rep and 2nd Radiesse rep in 5 years. And we've never had a local Restylane rep - shame on you Medicis! Now I have to decide whether to call Scottsdale and reestablish when Dysport comes out???)

Maybe your practices were not bringing in a large amount compared to the rep's quotas. We rate offices from A-Z and if you are C and below...I don't bother call on that office. 80/20 rule and so far it's been working. President's club 3 out of the past 5 years and great bonuses. Don't take it personal, but it makes sense to serve the offices who have the greatest potential in serving us. If my quota is 100 and your potential is only 5, I'm skipping you to talk to the next 5 doctors who have a potential to do 100 on their own and blow out my quotas.

our rep has abandoned us from the start. How are you expected to grow your business if they are not willing to help you out? The reps that helped us are reaping the benefits now-we are one of the busiest practices in the area. We don't buy our botox from that rep. Laserdoc

Rep,

That is rather short sighted. I started out way below your quota 6 years ago and you would have considered me below that C cut off and now I am my reps number one Botox account and the number one injector of Botox cosmetic in the state.

My Botox rep comes to see me at least on a quarterly basis. She works with my staff and wants to know if there is anything she can help us with. She has given us reminder cards, tickler files etc. So just because they are not a big account does not mean that they will not become a big account.

I think Allergan sales reps and sales managers are like used cars salesmen, utilizing pressure techniques and never ever offering customer support. they are terrible. Medicis on the other hand is much much better. The products the two companies offer are virtually the same and it therefor comes down to sales reps and sales managers. the ones in the southern california area are terrible and allergan needs to fire them starting from the top down and then try to recruit the medicis ones who have obviously been trained in much better customer service skills.

Just curious, what is the cost of Dysport through a rep?

LA doc,

I have had the exact opposite experience. I have never met my Medicis rep.

Pharma reps only focus on probable growth and high volume accounts
if they have a territory worth 12m and you do 15,000 of Botox you basically don't exist-

I've had 3 Botox reps in the 6 years I've been in business. My first one and my current one are great. My current rep really tries to help out. She comes to our events and gives us free product for training or other things. She always pops in at the end of her quarter and gets me to buy more Juvederm or Latisse cases but she always gives me free product to do it. I like her.

I don't have a Restylane rep because I'm not a big enough account so I have some business development person in AZ calling me (I'm in CA) trying to get me to buy product. It doesn't move so I don't buy it. I think it's weird that we don't have a rep.

On other reps.....Obagi reps have been terrible but the product is awesome. Cutera lasers reps not great. Syneron reps have been great.

I will have to say that our Allergan Botox rep is probably my best rep out of all our vendors. I have been in the industry for 7 years and have had the same rep through 3 different clinic openings. We have a med spa in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Karen our rep has always treated us with the upmost care and respect. She always answer the phone and has answers or finds out the answers. Karewn is awesome.
