Clear² PDT Fotofacials
ALA PDT Photodynamic Therapy
Until recently acne management has been fraught with difficult and complicated treatment regimens. Patients would apply ointments day in and day out yet they would have to wait for months just to know if that ointment is working for them or not. Some patients, who find their acne is resistant to most local ointments and special soaps, go on to use antibiotics for months. Others are put on Accutane. Patients are generally very scared about the potential side effects from Accutane, which include depression, birth defects as well as liver failure. Now we have a new modality to treat Acne patients, called ALA Photodynamic Therapy, ALA-PDT.
How does it work?
A solution containing 5-Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA) is applied topically to the skin. This medication is absorbed down through the dermis at a predictable rate and is absorbed by more quickly by fast-replicating cells like actinic keratosis and pre-cancerous cells and makes acne-causing bacteria P. acnes photoactive, allowing a special light e.g. BLU-U, V Beam or IPL to target and kill the bacteria. ALA-PDT also inhibits sebum production by reducing sebaceous glands. The procedure takes about 90 minutes and produces results that are superior to existing treatments.
• Surface Clear² PDT Fotofacials provide an effective means to treat medical conditions like acne, sun-damage, unwanted pigment, rosacea, actinic keratosis and even pre-cancerous skin cells.
• Clear² PDT Fotofacials for the first time can target individual cells and destroy them.
• Clear² PDT Fotofacials can be used anywhere on the body.
• Clear² PDT Fotofacials are FDA approved.
What results / side effects can I expect?
The acne starts to clear after the first treatment. Most patients generally need three treatments to have the desired outcome. The results have been impressive.
There is absolutely no patient discomfort and patient satisfaction is very high. ALA-PDT has revolutionized the way we treat acne. Until now, Accutane has been the only serious solution. Patients are thrilled with ALA-PDT as an alternative. The side effects are minimal. A few patients develop some redness after the treatment, which goes away in a couple of days.
